I spent quite a few years of my career in outbound sales. The “tools and techniques” I learned there have served me well for many years in the areas of establishing rapport, negotiating requirements and timelines, presenting concepts and ideas, collaboration across varied groups, and even conflict resolution. One of my first mentors taught me that people buy for one of two reasons: Inspiration or Desperation. It’s hard to inspire people into something that they didn’t know they needed.
